Frequently Asked Questions:
If you aren’t quite sure on whether to install Cydia or not, have a read through the answers to some common questions:
Is It Free?
Yes, it is but you do need to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad first. There are a few tweaks in the store that require a small payment but, for the most part, it’s all free to use. If you really don’t want to jailbreak, you can install one of the alternatives on offer (more details later) but be aware that they do not offer the same choices as jailbreak does does.
What is Cydia?
It is a third-party app store that is packed out with jailbreak tweaks, modifications, tweaked apps and games, ringtones, themes and much, much more. You can change the look of your device, the way t functions, the way the stock apps work and more and, because it is a management tool, any app or tweak you install can be deleted, updated and managed through Cydia.
Do I Really Need to Jailbreak?
Yes, you do. Cydia is not designed as a standalone app and it requires the jailbreak to work. When you install a jailbreak, Cydia is automatically downloaded. Read on for details of the alternatives that don’t need a jailbreak to work.
Is it Safe?
Yes, so long as you only download the jailbreak from the official source. There are plenty of unofficial sources on the internet and most are fake, doing nothing more than infecting your device, stealing your details or flooding you with ads and spam. When you use the official sources you are getting a genuine jailbreak with a genuine version of Cydia in a safe way. Although it is a form of ‘hacking’, downloaded correctly, it won’t cause any issues on your device.
What Apps are in Cydia?
Far too many to mention! These are some of the most downloaded ones:
- Auxo – this is multi-tasking as it should be
- BiteSMS
- Messages+
- iFile
- Merge
- NoNewsIsGoodNews
- Sparrow+
- TetherMe
- Zephyr
What About Cydia Impactor? Is That a Jailbreak?
No, it isn’t. The Impactor app is a very useful tool used to sign unofficial apps and sideload them onto your iPhone or iPad without installing a jailbreak. It is incredibly powerful, works on all platforms and devices but it is not a jailbreak utility.
Can I Add New App Sources to Cydia?
Yes, you can but you should be aware that not all external sources are safe to use so you do this at your own risk.
- Launch the appstore and tap the Manage option at the bottom of the screen
- Tap on Sources to see the sources already in Cydia
- Tap Edit and then Add
- Type the URL of the new source in EXACTLY otherwise, it won’t be installed
- Tap on Add Source and wait; the new source will be installed
- Restart the app and you can use the source

Cydia Alternatives:
If you are still unsure, try one of the alternatives. These are free, don’t require a jailbreak but don’t offer the same functionality that jailbreak does:
TweakBox:
One of the top-rated alternatives, TweakBox offers users a choice of thousands of apps, games and some jailbreak tweaks. It is free, easy to use and you can get all the details at the link.
Emus4U:
Another alternative, Emus4U app goes a bit further and offers more jailbreak tweaks, including games emulators for playing console games on your device. It is free and is well worth a look.
It’s down to you now.
Cydia is safe to use so long as you only download it from the official sources; try it, see what you think of it but keep in mind that you do have alternatives if you want to use them.
